Math MathLearning Center – www.mathlearningcenter.org As you may know, the district adopted a new math curriculm, “Bridges.” The curriculum website has many resources for families, inlcuding home math activites, information to families about the curriculum and it’s philosophy. Go to www.mathlearningcenter.org. At the very bottom of the page there is a small link that says, “Support for Families,” http://www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/materials/parents/parents1. This will take you to an information page. Then, on the left you can click on first grade to find more grade specific information. As this is my first year teaching this curriculum I would love to hear your feedback about the usefulness of this cite. Xtra Math – https://xtramath.org This is a good site for practicing math facts. You have to set up an account, but it is free. Third grade has had great success with it. There are a variety of levels. Math Nook – http://www.mathnook.com This site has highly engaging math activities that would be perfect for first graders. I really liked the game. Space Traffic Addition-Practice addition skills in a fun way. http://www.mathnook.com/math/bridge-pattern.html. This one is a great game to practice patterns and I like it because there are no words that kids have to read to do the activities. Math Playground – http://www.mathplayground.com/ Alien Addition is a great game to practice basic addition. It is perfect for any students that need additional practice. I also like that you can set the levels to meet the rate and level of students. Ducky Subtraction is another fun game that is engaging and practice subtraction games. Math Wire, http://mathwire.com/ This site has many activities to choose from. I like the games and how they go with the standards. It is easy to search and you don’t have the annoying advertising. It has great sample problems that you can print up and use with students. I also like the games because they look engaging for students but with actual real meaningful math content. Literacy Children’s Literature – http://www.carolhurst.com/index.html This site is a great resource for finding books to use. You can search for books by subject, curriculum areas, authors or an alphabetical list of children’s books. The books are reviewed and many come with lesson ideas. Vocabulary, Grammar, Literacy Terms: http://www.softschools.com/language_arts/ This is my new favorite resource for teachers and students! Choose from grammar, vocabulary or literacy terms and find a variety of worksheets and related online games. (This site also has resources for other subject areas, www.softschools.com) ABCya (games and apps for kids), http://www.abcya.com This is great site to use when you want to look at a couple games to play with students, without having to download all of them. It is easy for teachers and students to learn. They can go to this site and pick a game that makes learning fun. Guys Read – www.guysread.com. Boys Read – www.boysread.org American Library Association – http://www.ala.org/ Read Kiddo Read – www.readkiddoread.com Getting Boys to Read – http://www.gettingboystoread.com/ The Best Childrens Books – http://www.the-best-childrens-books.org/ Rainbow Books – http://glbtrt.ala.org/rainbowbooks/ Additional Resources Dance Mat Typing (keyboarding) – http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr#z34thyc Once students know the letters of the alphabet it would be good to help them learn how to use the keyboard. As we move to Smarter Balanced Assessment, it will help for students to have better computer and keyboarding skills. Handwriting Practice – http://handwritingpractice.net/handwriting/index.html This site allows you to create handwriting pages to print out. You can make worksheets with letters, words, or sentences. Safety and Health GoNoodle – https://www.gonoodle.com This site has short exercises for kids to do. It is very fun. It is intended for classroom use, but it would provide some indoor activity at home as well. Ready Kids – http://www.ready.gov/kids This site provides curriculum and information about disaster preparedness for kids, parents and educators. Social Studies Kids Geo (geography) – http://kidsgeo.com/index.php This site has fun pictures with lots of kid friendly information. I would use this site to help with my lessons on Columbus, the Pilgrims, and slavery. Brain Pop – http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/ I like that this site has simple videos with good information for students. I also like that there are interactive quizzes. The only downside is there are limited videos within the free part of the site. If you want access to more videos you have to have an account. Science Kids Gardening – http://www.kidsgardening.org/classroom-projects-2 I really like this site because it has a variety of projects you can do with younger kids in the garden.
